Our favorite feature of the bags was the ability to access your gear from several angles. If you’ve got your bag on the ground, you can access all of the contents from the top or back, giving you access to everything in the bag. However, if you’ve got the bag on your back or over your shoulder, you can access the items through smaller zippered openings on the sides.

For example, this is a great feature for photographers and videographers. Imagine holding a digital SLR in one hand, with the strap around your neck. On your back, you’ve got your STM Goods Dux backpack. You want to transition from closeup photos to long-distance photos, so it’s time to swap lenses. Without having to put down the camera or the backpack, you can open the side pouch exposing only the lens you need access to. You can remove the lens, swap them on the camera, and put the first one back in the bag.

ChargeTree Go

MagSafe

The MagSafe line offers a number of products that connect to an iPhone using the magnetic connector on the back of the phone. The MagLoop is a small ring that connects to the phone and gives you an easy way to hold the device, especially on long uses. It can also be flipped down to be used as a stand. It’s more flexible than other phone holders because it is removable without ruining the product. The MagLoop is available in 2 colors for $30.

The MagPod is a magnetic tripod stand that can hold your iPhone in nearly any position. This is because the ball joint on the head, which gives a nearly 180-degree range of motion. The legs on the stand can also be pulled in to turn it into a short selfie stick. The MagPod is available in two colors for $50.

ADT pairs the power of Google Nest and monitored security @ CES 2023

ADT Smart Home Security Home security is a top focus for a lot of people. The problem is that creating a safe and secure home can be challenging. You can buy pre-fabbed kits with connected sensors, but you end up locked into their ecosystem, but you’re required to monitor and respond to the alerts yourself. The other option is to go with an installed and monitored system, but you’re usually locked into their proprietary hardware, so if you ever want to change, you’re pretty much out of luck. Luckily, ADT has found an excellent middle-ground for consumers.

Who is ADT?

ADT is one of the biggest names in monitored home security. The company helps people to protect their homes without having to worry about installation, monitoring, or managing a home security system. The biggest advantage of one of the company’s systems is that emergency response is 8 times faster when managed by ADT as opposed to other competitors or even self-monitoring.

For those who are interested in their own installation, either for privacy reasons or a DIY spirit, ADT offers self-setup systems. Even if you install a system yourself, you had the ability to use the company’s monitoring services to improve peace of mind.

ADT’s connected home

In the spirit of self-installation and expanded options, ADT has begun offering connected home options. The company’s monitoring system can now be integrated with Google’s Nest product line. This means that Nest Cams, Nest Doorbells, Nest Thermostats, and even Nest Wi-Fi can be connected to ADT monitoring. In fact, you can use these connected devices while also having professional setup from the company’s installers.

One of the benefits of using consumer smart devices as part of your professional security setup is that you get all of the benefits of a smarthome while also getting all of the benefits of an ADT system. Using the Nest product line means that you can connect to your cameras, thermostat, and more while you are away. So, if someone rings your doorbell, you can see who is at the door even if you are on vacation. But, if there is a problem, an agent is able to respond and call the authorities if needed.

In addition, by using regular consumer hardware, you have the ability to make a change to your setup if needed. A change in life circumstances might mean you need to discontinue active monitoring. In that event, you are able to still access your Nest devices on your own and maintain security for your home on your own. This gives some flexibility in the hardware you have installed, as opposed to being stuck installing hardware that only works with the service provider that installed it. This gives owners more choices and reduces electronic waste in the event of a change.

Apollo brings full automation to ADT’s commercial offerings @ CES 2023

ADT Commercial Apollo security robot It seems like every day we hear about another industry that AI, robotics, and automation are coming to improve. Fast food service has gotten better with more automation in the kitchen. Manufacturing has been helped immensely by robotics and automation, making the jobs in factories safer and less physically intensive. However, one place that we didn’t expect to see robotics, at least not today, is security. However, ADT Commercial has a new robot security guard called Apollo.

What is Apollo?

Apollo is a humanoid robot that is intended to augment traditional security guards in an office, retail space, or any other commercial property. It is part of the company’s new EvoGuard initiative, which seeks to infuse high-tech capabilities into ADT’s commercial security offerings.

A large part of a human security guard’s job is to observe their surroundings and report on what they see. This can be done by walking the premises and looking for things that are out of place, or by sitting with a wall of screens watching an entire property at once. If something out of the ordinary is observed, the correct people are alerted. This could be another member of security, the property owner, or even the police.

Apollo is capable of doing all of this, without any of the restrictions of a person. The robot can travel around a property easily looking for changes in the environment, or even recognizable issues. Once an issue is recognized, it can report back to a security supervisor and a human can take over control of the robot to go and investigate further. If warranted, the agent can then notify someone on the grounds, the property owner, or the local police.

One of the interesting features of Apollo is the virtual reality option. Using a VR headset, the supervisor is able to essentially become the robot. They are able to see through the perspective of the robot and manipulate it as if they were there. This includes moving its hands, opening or closing doors, checking windows, etc. However, if the supervisor is unable or unwilling to use the VR experience, the entire thing can also be controlled from the system’s computer-based dashboard.

This is actually the reason why Apollo is humanoid. If the purpose was merely to observe and report, then it could have been designed to look like a trash can. However, because it is intended to be able to be used remotely to accomplish goals, the company let it was important to make it with a wider range of motion. But, since all of our environments are designed for humans, it was decided that Apollo should be humanoid, as well.

Summary

Apollo is currently in use through partnerships with three test partners. Using their feedback, the company and its design partner are able to make adjustments before it becomes available for a wider audience, hopefully during quarter 1 of 2023. Achievement Unlocked: Hovergym replaced your gym membership @ CES 2023

LG Labs Hovergym home gym Trying to stay in shape can be a real challenge. If you know what you’re doing, you can have your own equipment. However, if you don’t know what you’re doing, you have to go to the gym and pay a membership fee, and possibly even a personal trainer. But, if you want to work out on your schedule at home and have the convenience of a trainer, LG has a new project called Hovergym.

What is Hovergym?

The Hovergym seems to be a useful and focused spin on Nintendo’s Wii Balance board. Similar in size to the balance board, this piece of equipment aims to be your all-in-one gym experience at home, completely guided and customized with their workout application. Hovergym combines the Hoverboard Hoverdisk with Hovergym’s patented Bionic Resistance Technology, creating a virtual reality fitness system that gamifies your workout. This device has a slim, pill-shaped design, that has enough surface for most people to stand on with their feet at shoulder width. There are two handles on the top surface, and those handles are what you will be using for the majority of your workouts.

The handles are attached with tension cables. These cables are designed to give what they are calling “time under tension” focused workouts. Most devices focused only focus on having tension one way, but the Hovergym gives you tension both ways, ensuring that you are evenly working muscles until you release the handles. These designers wanted to be sure that consumers would be able to customize their workouts as much as possible. There are many different workouts that you can do with the Hovergym, but you can opt to change out the two separate handles for a singular barbell to change things up.

On the subject of customizing your workout, the resistance weight can be easily adjusted via their integrated application. The weight can be adjusted to up to 220; but also, the application allows you to do things like set timers for each of your workouts or even set rep numbers for your sets. Also within the app, are instructional guides for your workouts. You can choose between various workout regimens, and it will give you a visual guide, a video of the workout, that shows you exactly how the maneuvers are supposed to be safely executed. As an added bonus, the screen can play a video of you, side-by-side with your virtual trainer, for more detailed coaching. You can even set challenges for yourself because we all know that goals are a key component for real progress.

Hoverdisk is the key component of Hovergym and it uses patented Bionic Resistance Technology. It uses an electromagnetic induction system that creates a virtual reality with real-time feedback on your performance. This is how information is shared to the application to track and grade your workouts, and how it learns what maneuvers you may be doing incorrectly in junction with your camera.

Summary

Right now, the Hovergym does not have a set date for release, but the estimated time of release is slated for an early 2024 timeframe. Similarly, the price tag for the Hovergym is also not currently determined. However, the current ballpark price is somewhere in the $1,500 range, according to Jacob. This seems like an easy buy for fitness gamers out there. With the ability to sync to your current device, keep track of your progress and set achievements for yourself, this can also appeal to tech-savvy fitness buffs as well. Lighthouse Tech Visual Impaired Smart Glasses Over the past decade, it seems that everything has become smart. From lightbulbs to refrigerators, to even glasses, everything is getting smarter. In some cases, the benefits have been obvious, such as being able to control lightbulbs without having to go to a particular place in the room or having special wiring. However, some items being smart have mostly been gimmicky, like glasses. That is until now – as Lighthouse Tech has a new take on the tech, making it a truly useful addition for many users.

What is Lighthouse Tech?

Lighthouse Tech is a company making smart glasses for a new demographic – those with visual impairment. In general, smart glasses have included pretty pedestrian features, such as Bluetooth speakers or cameras. On the other hand, we’ve seen products like Google Glass, which were both ahead of their time and surprisingly useless.

Lighthouse Tech has thrown out all of those ideas and totally changed directions. These glasses are not intended to make you look techy. Instead, the glasses themselves look entirely like normal glasses. These glasses, however, are designed to help improve the safety of wearers with visual impairments by giving alerts and information about hazards that other safety measures generally miss.

In particular, the glasses are intended to find items outside of the range of a walking stick. This includes, but is not limited to, low hanging tree branches, street signs, store signs, and more. Specifically, the glasses look for things that are hanging or physically separated from the base to which they are attached.

How does it work?

The Lighthouse Tech glasses are designed to protect the safety of their wearer. This is done using front-facing sensors. These sensors are able to detect obstacles within the path of the wearer, as well as the distance between the glasses and the obstacle.

The glasses are able to provide feedback to the wearer through vibration. This is an important detail because, if the glasses are to be used on the sidewalk on a bust street, audible feedback, including beeps and speech, would be difficult to hear. In addition, audible feedback would make the glasses more obvious for their intention, possibly making the wearer more self-conscious about wearing them. The design of the glasses, which are traditional and low profile, are intended to go the other way. Thus, audible feedback would undermine the concept.

To improve feedback, the company also offers a small, connected bracelet. This allows the wearer to move the feedback from the temples to the wrist. For many, the wrist is a more sensitive area of the body and can help improve the awareness of the safety alerts.

The Lighthouse Tech glasses are currently in active development. The company is searching for beta testers to give the tech a try and give feedback. Others have needs that can progress in unexpected ways, and whose trajectory can be monitored easily. However, the technology to track these conditions has generally been limited to doctors’ offices or companies like Lab Corp. However, in the past few years, the ability to monitor and track a person’s health has been miniaturized to the point where we can now do it at home. One company that has been at the forefront of this medical democratization has been Withings.

Who are Withings?

Withings is a company that makes a variety of at-home health and medical tracking devices. The brand has been around for a number of years and produced devices ranging from connected scales to blood pressure monitors. Most of the company’s devices are fully connected and sync together into the Withings app on your mobile device.

This integration of devices can give you a better overall view of your health, from tracking weight loss progress to steps taken and even a regular log of blood pressure. The system can also be integrated with data from other providers, including Apple and Google. Together you can track your activity, weight, and more.

Withings urine analysis

This year at CES 2023, the company showed off an entirely new entry into the product lineup – urine analysis. The new product is called U-Scan and is intended to help you keep track of a variety of important body metrics at home without any need to go to a lab. In fact, the U-Scan is like a urine analysis lab in your bathroom.

Now, the initial question might be, “Why do you want urine analysis at home?” That is a perfectly reasonable response, as it is a fairly new idea. The reason is that there are a number of health metrics that can be determined and monitored using this analysis. Using the U-Scan, you can monitor these metrics at home without doing anything special or outside of your existing habits.

The U-Scan device makes its presence almost unseen while still providing its value. The device is only about 90mm in diameter and fits into the toilet. So long as it is in the right location, you literally need to change nothing about your bathroom time in order to gain the benefits.

Benefits of U-Scan

The device is able to test for and monitor a variety of biomarkers. The cartridges that are inserted into the device contain a dozen different test pods, which is where the tests are carried out. Once the tests are completed, the device syncs the data to your Withings app to be compared against previous results as well as other Withings data.

If something is out of sync, the app is able to alert you to changes in your body’s state. For example, the U-Scan is capable of tracking nutrition and hydration. If you work out, which can be logged into the app, and then your electrolytes or water level are low, the app is able to let you know that your post-workout behaviors might need a change.
