Nest Protect Remakes the Venerable Smoke Detector at CES

Nest Protect CO Smoke Alarm
Nest Protect CO Smoke Alarm

Nest, known for its groundbreaking interactive thermostat and mobile device app for controlling your home heating and air-conditioning, is now following up this success with a new device called the Nest Protect. The nest protect is a high-end combination smoke detector and carbon monoxide (CO) detector. But, as we expect from Nest, this home safety and wellness device is also connected to the Nest mobile app, sending you an alert when the device is activated and what kind of emergency is detected.

There are other user friendly features built in to the Nest Protect. The Nest site says it all – “Safety shouldn’t be annoying.” When alerting to a potential emergency Nest Protect gives you an early Heads-Up telling you what the danger is and where it is. If the problem is that you just burned something on the stove, no problem. No need to swing towels or get up on chairs. Silence nuisance alarms, like burning toast or bacon, with a wave of your hand. And the typical annoying battery-low chirps of other smoke detectors is a thing of the past. Nest Protect will send a message to your smartphone if the alarm goes off or if the batteries need replacing.

Vuzix M100 Smart Glass vs. Google Glass

Vuzix-M100Of course, I wear Google Glass. Vuzix has their own wearable technology in the Vuzix M100 Smart Glass. Therefore, I had to see what their glass was all about.

Geared toward industrial or commercial use, the M100 can snap onto a pair of safety goggles so you can use them and stay protected. The M100 is an Android based wearable that can track events, scan product, take pictures and video, manage calendars, and much more.

Although I said the M100 works well for industrial, healthcare, retail and other use, it can also be used as a personal device, just like Glass is. Tether it to your phone to talk back and forth or just sync with Wifi.

Parrot Jumping Sumo Leaps Into Your Hands

Parrot Jumping Sumo
Parrot Jumping Sumo

Parrot had a lot of different types of remote controlled drones at CES 2014. One of them was called the Jumping Sumo. The Sumo is a small remote-controlled device that can turn on a dime. Controlled with your smartphone or tablet, you can use two finger gestures to turn and control. The camera on the Sumo allows for 1st person view.

The jumping sumo has two large wheels that can push together for better control. It’s big feature, though, is the fact you can push a button and have the sumo jump up in the air — approximately 2-3 feet up.

The sumo can also be controlled up to 160 feet away with the mobile tether. The VGA (320×240) image returns to the device so you can see what it does.

The jumping Sumo is not out yet, but you can watch for it at www.parrot.com/usa/ces/

Parrot Zik Headphones with Lou Reed Settings

Parrot-ZikA good pair of Bluetooth headphones is something I look for when doing home recording.

A good pair of bluetooth headphones tuned by Lou Reed and I know I can fine tune any project or just listen to some great music.

I was at the Parrot booth learning more about Zik and how in the final months Lou Reeds’ crew helped Parrot put these settings together. Not only will you be able to set them to his tastes, but you can also adjust the headphones via a smartphone app to feel like you are in the front row or the far back.

Dexcom Innovates with Continuous Blood Glucose Monitoring at CES

Dexcom_G4_PlatinumTerry Gregg, CEO of Dexcom, chats with Chris Montera, guest host with Health Tech Weekly, about the new continuous glucose monitoring system from Dexcom debuting at the International CES conference earlier this month in Las Vegas. The Dexcom G4 Platinum glucose monitor is the all-new Continuous Glucose Monitor featuring an extended 20 foot wireless range, glucose trends on a video monitor in vibrant color and a sleek and small receiver available in three colors – Classic Black, Ocean Blue, and Tickled Pink.

With the new “Share Cradle,” the uses can insert their wireless monitor for charging and also upload their monitoring data on their connected mobile device to up to 5 people. These can be family caregivers like a parent or adult child as well as health care professionals caring for the patient. The follower app allows those care givers to see what is going on with their loved one in real time via the direct connection with the continuous blood glucose monitor.
