Boost up the Stereo and Enjoy the Original Functionality

KenwoodCars and trucks don’t just get us from point a to point b anymore. Modern vehicles also have really great tech packages included, as well. Car interiors have come a long way too. The look and function of the dashboards and touch screens are a selling feature all of their own. And even though the radios are much improved over models from the past, there are still those who simply love creating their own sound systems to customize their vehicles. That, however, has become more difficult because once you remove the factory amplifier, you loose the functionality that was built into the display, and nobody wants that.

Kenwood now has a solution to this problem. Their new ADS Maestro line allows you to keep the functionality of your great looking dash and upgrade the stereo system both. With Maestro AR, you are able to take that factory signal that is built into the amp and convert it so that you can use their new amp as well as the all of the pre-existing functions in the vehicle’s touch screen.

Don’t let the process scare you. Although this type of installation use to include a lot of very complex wiring, Maestro has simplified it with their T Harness for an easy connection. There is also a phone app that makes setup a breeze. And in typical Kenwood fashion, the specs are tight with 75 watts by 6 rms, 6 channels of amplification and 4 channels of pre-outs that allow you to add additional amps.

They offer all of this at a price that is far below the competition for a system of this level. The amp is $800, the Maestro AR is $129 and the T Harnesses are $40. For more information, check them out on their website.

The Best In-Car Viewing Makes for Happy Traveling Families

BEULERCar entertainment systems are the best thing to come along since sliced bread. No family trip should have to endure the unending heartbreak of not having one. The folks at Beuler understand this and have produced the most advanced flip down screen in the world.

This new unit has a high resolution HD screen with a really great viewing angle that allows full viewing even from the side. It’s also boasts a very low profile so as not to take up too much space. This model has a motorized screen that is accessible from the touch of a button and parents can also control the unit from the front seat of the vehicle.

It’s capable of playing any HD movie through the SD slot. And in bringing car viewing up to date, you can even use Wi-Fi to stream your favorite content from sources like Netflix and YouTube. There is also an HDMI input if you want to wire into your other devices. It’s sleek, simple to use and offers a wide array of entertainment choices for the whole family.

Also at the Beuler booth, we got to take a look at another new little product. And when we say little, we aren’t kidding. They have made the smallest cell phone in the world. It’s actually one tenth the size of the average cell phone today. It’s a complete and fully functioning GSM cell phone with an LED display and working manual key buttons. It takes a micro SIM card and can make and receive calls with its own unique phone number. Also, it can be paired to your regular smartphone via Bluetooth. It’s perfect for a “backup phone” that can be used when jogging, biking or anytime you don’t want to carry your bulky smartphone.

Both products, as well as their other product line, can be found at their website. The flip screen retails for $695, while the miniature GMS cell phone is just $89.

Safe And Secure While Playing Sports with In&motion

In&motionEvery once in a while a product comes along that really catches your eye for a very good reason: and the reason here is safety. In&motion is a wearable airbag that is designed to keep you safe while pursuing your favorite hobby or sport such as skiing, horseback riding, or motorcycle riding. It is based on sensors that fit in and around the vest worn by the user whose purpose is to inflate the vest during times of danger but before impact.

The interesting thing about this airbag is that you can tell it if you are a novice or an experienced sportsman and what sport you are participating in. Different sports require different movements and the sensors pick up on that. There are several configurations for the airbag making it adjustable for various sports and allows it to be available for men, women and children.

This is available in parts of Europe now and will be coming to the US when the demand is high enough.

QNX Provides the Platform for ADAS

QNX logoQNX might be a name that is unfamiliar to you, but their technology could be inside your vehicle. QNX has worked with more than 40 different automakers across the world, and has an over 50% market share in infotainment dashboards.

Nick spoke with Global Director of Business Development at QNX, Andrew Poliak, at CES 2016. They discussed the many ways that the QNX software platform is being used in vehicles. They are in OnStar and in Ford Sync 3. QNX provides the whole software platform that car radios and entertainment systems are built on.

What makes the QNX platform unique is that it is highly reliable, it gives an immersive experience, and has a great customizable interface. Their platform can use the same operating system to run safety critical components in a vehicle as well as the vehicle’s entertainment components.

At CES 2016, QNX had a number of ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) demonstrations that showed the pedigree that they already have in vehicles, and that blends that information with an entertainment experience. QNX Software Developer Nabil Ould-Brahim gave Nick a demonstration from inside a vehicle.

Toyota’s FCV Plus Will Use Hydrogen Fuel Cells

Toyota logoToyota believes that hydrogen is the future of the automotive industry. They have created a concept vehicle called the FCV Plus, which demonstrates Toyota’s vision of a connected, sustainable hydrogen society.

Nakia spoke with Product Specialist for Toyota, Maggie Clark, at CES 2016. They talked about Toyota’s FCV Plus. It is a concept vehicle that uses hydrogen fuel cell technology that Toyota has been working on since 1992.

The FCV Plus is capable of generating electricity directly from hydrogen stored outside the vehicle and thus operating as a stable source of electric power for use at home or on the go. The FCV Plus will be able to generate so much electricity that it will be able to wirelessly charge an electric vehicle that is pulled up next to it. The FCV Plus could also be plugged into the grid and be able to charge up to ten homes on a block.

The fuel cells themselves are very advanced. When it is time to replace your vehicle with a new one, you could remove the fuel cell stack and continue using it as a stationary fuel cell stack that can provide electricity to your home or business.

Toyota is expecting that their FCV Plus concept vehicle will be on the market around 2030.

Cobra Dash Cams and Detectors at CES

Cobra LogoCobra Electronics are well-known for their radar detectors and other automotive products. Here at CES, Cobra won the TWICE Picks Award for one of its flagship units, the CDR 855 BT Drive HD dash cam, so Todd Aune finds out more about the latest devices from Mark Karnes, VP of Marketing at Cobra.

On the table are two relatively new devices from Cobra, the CDR 855BT dash cam and the world’s smallest DSP radar detector, the DSP 9200 BT. Starting with the dash cam, it’s a connected device, pairing via Bluetooth with a smartphone to acquire GPS co-ordinates which are then sync’d with the video footage. On top of this, the dash cam can work with Cobra’s iRadar app on the smartphone to know the location of cameras and provide alerts to the driver. The app is shared with the radar detector, so as the detector finds cameras, these can be reported back to the app and then up to the cloud to keep the camera database up-to-date for everyone through the iRadar Community. That’s pretty neat.

Not to be outdone, the radar detector was a CTA Honoree Award for an Intelligent Vehicle Device. The trick in this radar detector is to use digital signal processing to tell the difference between signals from the new collision avoidance systems and law enforcement speed guns. A range of radar and laser signals are presented to the driver as detected, with both visual and audio warnings, and the unit also benefits from alerts provided from the iRadar app on a connected smartphone.

Both devices are on sale now for US$349 for the radar detection and US$149 for the dash cam.

Todd Aune bridges the technology gap with the The Elder Divide.

Pioneer Brings CarPlay and Android Auto to the After-Market

Pioneer logoPioneer is a brand for well-known for its in-car audio and entertainment systems so it comes as no surprise that the company is bringing a range of after-market units with Apple CarPlay and Google’s Android Auto. Todd and Marlo get a demo of the latest product with Ted Cardenas from Pioneer.

On show here is the freshly-announced Pioneer AVH-4200-NEX, which is one of three products which incorporate both CarPlay and Android Auto. As a result, the display and user interface will take on the persona of the connected device. The in-dash receiver connects to the smartphone using a wired connection as the phones contribute heavily to the running of apps. Plugging in the phones avoids issues with data speeds and keeps the battery charged, though Bluetooth is used in Android Auto for calls.

Voice is heavily used by both the driver to control the NEX and for the system to respond. Voice can be used to compose and listen to text messages, to navigate and to talk to Siri or Google Now. This keeps the need to look at the screen to a minimum and enhances safety.

If your current vehicle’s in-car entertainment system doesn’t support CarPlay or Android Auto, the Pioneer NEX range offers a great way to upgrade to the latest auto technology. Priced at around $700, the AVH-4200-NEX will be available in March.
