BlueTooth Watch Interfaces With Smart Phones

Casio BlueTooth Watch

At the Casio booth was a technology demonstration of low power BlueTooth embedded in a Casio watch that allows it to interface to Smart Phone devices.

Normally BlueTooth products need a rechargeable battery but Casio’s Low Energy BlueTooth can last up to 2 years before the battery needs replacing.

The Smart Phone demonstration shows how the watch can communicate over BlueTooth with the Smart Phone for providing feedback about phone calls, email, text messages received and other features that can be profiled in the watch.

Portable Power with Horizon’s Fuel Cells

Horizon Power CellHorizon showed their green energy solution for powering all your electronic gadgets using hydrogen.

HydroFILL is a “world-first” small-scale home hydrogen station that allows consumers or retailers/distributors to refill solid state canisters in a simple way, using water and electricity as only input. By adding water, and plugging the HydroFILL into a electrical wall-socket (or a solar panel), consumers can generate hydrogen and store it in a solid form automatically in HydroSTIK cartrridges.

Horizon calls this fuel cartridge technologies, miniPAK, and it’s able to charge a variety of portable electronics for longer durations and at a lower cost than existing disposable, rechargeable battery alternatives. Each miniPak is equivalent to 100 AA batteries and can be recharged about 100 times.

The unit in this video consists of three 46 inch LCDs, stacked together. The video shows a demo of photos and videos floating around the LCDs that allow user interaction. You can drag and resize the objects and even play, stop, and rewind the video objects. All three LCDs were controlled by a single PC.

Typical uses for this interactive display technology is in retail shops, lobbies, museums, and many other places where user interaction is needed.

Casio’s Hybrid-GPS Camera

At the Casio booth, they showed off the EX-H20G Hybrid-GPS camera. This is a 14.1-megapixel camera that will track your location inside buildings or other places where no GPS signals can be received. Casio is calling this hybrid-GPS. The hybrid tracking is performed by a three-way accelerometer and a three-way direction sensor.

The camera also has over 10,000 world-wide landmarks programmed into the camera for locating points of interest. This allows you to see how far you are from the nearest landmark.

Other features of the camera are: 24 – 240 mm wide-angle zoom lens; 360-degree panoramic image mode, and h.264 formatted video.

Toshiba Glasses Free 3D TV

Toshiba was demonstrating lots of 3D TVs in their booth at CES. 3D was the big buzz word at last year’s CES show and I wasn’t impressed.

This year all the major companies were showing 3D TVs and the technology (and price points) have improved. There are a number of issues surrounding 3D: cost, lack of content, multiple 3D technologies, and having to wear the stupid 3D glasses.

Well, Toshiba was showing off a “glasses free” 3D TV. The demo was interesting but you could tell it’s was a first generation product. You needed to be right in front of the display to see the 3D effects and it still wasn’t as good as viewing with glasses.

I don’t believe “glasses free” 3D TV (or 3D TV in general) is here for everyone, but there’s always next year.

Dexim Portable Power Solutions

At CES Unveiled, Dexim showed a number of great power solutions for your iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad devices.

The P-Flip Solar Power charger uses the energy of the sun to charge a battery pack in about 15 hours. This pack can then be used to power or charge your iPhone device.

They also offer the P-Flip Foldable Power Dock which is like it’s newer Solar powered cousin but uses regular electricity to charge it’s internal 2,000 mA battery. Both P-Flip models hold the iPhone 3 and iPhone 4 models for easy viewing and movie watching.

What I thought was the most interesting product was the Visible G Charger. This is a cool wall charger that displays the charging condition in the wire that connects to your device. You see color lights pulsating through the wire as it’s charging and the pulsating slows down as the device becomes charged. The lights stop and turn off when the device is full charge. In fact, the entire charger turns off, saving electricity. Dexim claims you will save 85% of standby power used by other chargers.

The Scuba masks will work down to 300 feet and last 2.5 to 3 hours on a single charge. The camera lens is located at the top of the mask in between your eyes so the camera sees what you see. All the masks support both still and video. The images are recorded to a micro SD card and a USB port is provided for downloading the images and video from the mask.
