Sensors and Apps Combined into Affordable Alert Service

The smartphone is changing security monitoring and home automation  – with consumers demanding the ease of use of app based display and control. Smartphone connectivity and apps permit Lowe’s to offer packages like the Smart Kit and Safe and Secure are basic security systems in a box.  In addition to hardware  such as plant monitors, smoke detectors, instrusion alarms, medical alert or area coverage monitors, Lowes now offers a variety of monitoring services that that can trigger alert or safety alarms.

Integration of pet doors, sprinkler systems and other sensors all combine to observe the daily routine of seniors and alert via SMS is less than $15 per month.

Rocstor AES 256-bit Enctypted Hard Drive

Rocstor has unveiled a new portable external hard drive that practically guarantees that your data won’t be stolen. The hard drive, which comes in capacities up to 1 TB, has a slot for a smart card. Enter the card, punch in your code (which you choose), and you unlock the drive and all of the data you have stored on it. The drives are FIP certified and ship with multiple cards. For users that need additional cards, they can be purchased blank and inserted into a unit to be programmed to work with it. PIN Numbers can be changed an unlimited number of times as well.

These hard drives are probably not for average consumers, but more for business and government. They are designed to protect highly-sensitive data and eliminate those stories that are always in the news these days about stolen laptops filled with account and credit card information. The drives retail in the $400-600 range and are available now from Rocstor.

Mastercard 1 time use Credit Card Numbers on your iPhone

Todd and Steve talk with Heather Stone, VP at Mastercard, about their new app that allows you to bring up a one time use credit card number on the fly. The GlobalVCard app by Mastercard will allow you to also send 1 time use credit card number by email, text or photo to an employee or family member with restrictions in under a minute. The app is available now for iPhone,iPad, Android and Blackberry.

PrivacyStar: Call and SMS Blocking for Android and Blackberry

If you want to insure that you are on the Election Year “Do Not Call” list, this is the app for you.

Privacy Star allows you to block numbers from annoying pollsters and solicitors, and if they get really obnoxious, report them to the Federal Trade Commission.  Similar calls from bill collectors including date, time and frequency are logged for action.

There’s also an optional Do Not Disturb mode, which forwards all non blocked incoming calls to voicemail with the option to send a custom text message acknowledging the call.

DataLocker Protecting Your Data

the DLS3 by DatalockerTodd Cochrane and Tom Newman spoke to Peter Whitman Director of Operations for DataLocker, about the importance of encrypting your data, especially when traveling. Peter Whitman talked about DataLocker newest product the DLS3. The DLS3 is an encrypted portable hard drive. It connects to your computer by USB 3.0 technology (it will work on USB 2.0) It use military grade 256 bit AES XTA mode encryption.

The DLS3 drive uses two factors of authentication a RFD card and a pass code. If someone tries to guess the code and enters the wrong code nine times the system will wipe the data. There is rapid secure wipe. It also uses keypad randomization so you can not figure out the code by lifting the fingerprints. It is platform independent so you can use with a Mac or PC. You can use is as a bootable drive and even partition it. It should be shipping in March.
