Digital Health Study Says People Want to Share Health Data

AND-Medical-wcuff-propageHealth Tech Weekly host Jamie Davis, the Podmedic visited the Digital Health Pavilion at the International CES 2015 in Las Vegas to find the latest tech, tools, and information on digital health for consumers. He stopped by the AND Medical booth to talk with CEO Terry Duesterhoeft about a recent study they commissioned to determine how open consumers wish to be with the data from home health connected devices.

AND Medical makes many home health monitoring devices like blood pressure machines and they wanted to find out how much information consumers were willing to share with their health care professionals and other caregivers. They were surprised by how open consumers were willing to be with their health data in a protected environment in order to help them get healthier.

Most people were willing to share some or all of their collected health data with their doctors, nurses and other caregivers. This seems to go against the belief in professional health circles that considers consumers much more privacy conscious. Siphiwe Baleka Digital Tech Keeps Truck Drivers Healthy

Truck driver fitness expert Siphiwe Baleka used to be a truck driver. His experience with driving a truck and trying to stay fit is what drove him to come up with a digital health fitness program for truckers. He gained 15 pounds in the first few months driving and he knew that was no good. National statistics say that 86% of truck drivers are overweight and 57% of them are obese. These over-the-road drivers are in great need of ways to get their health and fitness back under control. Siphiwe came up with a solution for his employer, New Prime Trucking.

In his digital health solution, Siphiwe used digital communication over mobile devices to help the drivers track their health and fitness while giving them information on small, incremental changes that offer them the ability to change their lives. The American Medical Association declared obesity a disease earlier this year meaning that these truck drivers need treatment for their disease to get healthy again. This program has made such an impact that Siphiwe and Prime Trucking won a EveryDayHealth.com Digital Health Award as Healthiest Company for their program that allowed their drivers to lose more than 25 pounds on average.

United Healthcare Digital Initiatives for Ongoing Patient Health

united-healthcare-logoHealth Tech Weekly’s guest correspondent, Chris Montera from the EMS Garage Podcast brings us this interview from the United Healthcare booth in the Digital Health Pavilion at International CES earlier this month. Tom Paul from United Healthcare talks with Chris about how their customers want to engage with them via digital channels.

Patients want to monitor their health, learn about healthy initiatives and treatment alternatives, and get their insurance information via online and digital channels. Because of this, United Healthcare is involved in numerous initiatives to encourage healthy behaviors and communities through digital means. These include programs like their Dance, Dance, Revolution game programs and contests in community schools and health education programs promoted online.

One new digital initiative they recently announced is “My Easy Book.” This new program allows users to look up a healthcare provider, schedule an appointment and pay any fees or copays, all online. Another new program is centered around providing high quality, informative and interesting online education for diabetes patients. The best part is that United Healthcare is providing many of these services to both members and non-members, a clear indicator of their commitment to ongoing community health and wellness. Look for more digital initiatives from this healthcare innovator in the future here at the Tech Podcast Network.

Fitbug KiK Programs Provide Individualized Health Planning

fitbug-orbChris Montera, on loan to the Health Tech Weekly podcast, talks with the folks at Fitbug while attending the International CES conference earlier this month in Las Vegas. Fitbug is debuting their new KiK initiative that pairs their fitness tracking devices with a new interactive program to provide individualized health care planning along with helping you meet your activity goals.

Fitbug founder Paul Landau, a fitness enthusiast and former management consultant, chats with Chris Montera about how the Fitbug device works with the new KiK program to help you meet all your fitness and health goals. It includes help with setting nutrition and other wellness goals through links to webcasts and other online resources that work with your Fitbug activity program to provide you ongoing encouragement. This greatly improves your chances of successfully meeting your goals, creating a healthier you!

The Fitbug device tracks steps, calories burned, distance traveled and works with an integrated mobile app that puts that information in the Fitbug cloud system and allows the Fitbug KiK system to start making suggestions to help you meet your stated goals. In addition to tracking activity, the Fitbug also tracks the quality of your sleep patterns, an often overlooked part of a healthy lifestyle program.

CES 2014: Living In Digital Times Brings Smaller Products to CES

I got to talk with Robin Raskin, a former PC Magazine editor, who wanted to bring lifestyle items to CES. Medium size companies Digital health, aging solutions, sports and more. They represent real people that have real products.

For example, Canary is a sensor that will tell you temperature, noise detection, and also allow you to do things like unlock doors for people, see what’s going on at the house and more.

Another product is called Kurio – a phone for kids that want a smartphone but shouldn’t have a $800 device in which they can text and play games at all hours in the day. Kurio has parental controls so you can say how much they text or play Candy Crush.
