Kenmore Connect Makes Appliances Smart

Kenmore‘s Connect system turns your white goods and household appliances into smart devices. Through either a touchscreen on the device or remote access from a PC, you can see what your refrigerator is doing, how much energy it’s consuming and whether there’s a problem. If there is something up, Kenmore’s technicians can carry out remote diagnosis to see what’s wrong.

Available from 2012 across the Kenmore range.

OWC — Other World Computing — High Performance Aftermarket SSD Drives

Grant Dahlke from introduces Sandforce processor-based high capacity, high-performance SSD (solid state drive) hard drives for computers such as Apple’s Macbook Air that are up to three times larger and up to 22% faster than the drive than Apple’s OEM drive. They also have a line of drives for older IDE and ATA machines, which enables much better performance from older computing hardware due to the much faster read/write times of solid state drives as opposed to the performance of conventional spinning hard drives.

Outlier Introduces Swagg.com & Android And iPhone Apps

Outlier Inc. announced a new website, Swagg.com. It’s also available as an Android and iPhone app. It’s based on market research done by Outlier with a goal of making the shopping experience more convenient. It allows shoppers to give a gift card in a unique manner – with a bow that unwraps (virtually speaking) and soon can include a personalized picture or video. If you aren’t sure which gift card to get for that certain someone then you can even send a Swagg gift card which the recipient can exchange for one to their merchant of choice.

The apps and website also allow shopper to receive offers, but only for the types of categories or location they are interested in – the location offer is similar to Groupon. In addition the mobile apps will enable consumers to carry virtual versions of gift cards, reward cards, and the like so that you always have them with you when you’re on the go. It will even tell your your remaining balance on a gift card – no more writing it on the back with a Sharpie as I have been doing.

iRobot Scooba cleans your Hardwood Floors

Over the past couple of years we have watched the iRobot line of products expand. At CES 2011 they were showing off the iRobot Scooba, it essentially is a mini iRobot designed to clean hardwood and tiled floors. Specifically they showed it cleaning the bathroom floor.

I immediately wanted one. With a reservoir for cleaning solution and a separate reservoir for the sucked up dirty water this product from iRobot is the perfect cleaning device for those jobs you really hate to do.

Displaylink Full HD via USB 3.0

Displaylink allows you to connect another monitor from your computer via USB. The cool thing about Displaylink with USB 3.0 is that you can drive a bus powered monitor with no power cord. So essentially you have a bus powered monitor, that is connected only by a USB 3.0 cable to a computer that has a USB 3.0 bus and no other cable. Displaylink has been driving bus powered monitors for a long time but generally not one that supports HD.

Displaylink technology can now be found on a number of monitors in the marketplace. You should always look for the displaylink logo on the packaging or visit the displaylink website for links to a variety of the vendors that support the technology. While USB 3.0 has not had wide deployment yet this is an indication of what will be available in coming months as more computer manufactures get on the USB 3.0 bus.

GoalZero Portable Solar Charging Solutions!

Green was another big theme again at CES 2011 and GoalZero had a full line of portable recharging products. I have often been skeptical of these types of devices but it is obvious that GoalZero know what they are doing and use a very logical approach to their entire product line. If you want something that will simply charge a phone, or something that will keep a light on all night or charge a laptop they have it and it will scale.

Combining battery storage with solar technology is a great combination and the prices are such that any outdoor person would consider picking up some of their solutions. This is the portable solar powered charging solution that I can endorse without reservation!
